The Artist, imaginatively and personally takes form in the role of Doctor and is concerned with making pills rather than taking them.
The general or preliminary focus for the project concerns suffering related to mental illness, as well as coping with life-changing diagnoses including cancer and HIV.
ARTx is centered on bringing humanity to issues that are often dehumanized, monetized and capitalized on by the pharmaceutical industry—made scientific and stigmatized. The Pill Project helps effectively break down both social and personal barriers, resulting in community engagement, and the opening of a dialogue between people that in itself has great potential to heal.
The Pills have been filled with objects (abstract or otherwise – wisdom, lasers, acceptance, power objects, a smile, a breath, reminders of beauty and of nature) remedies, if you will (you will). They will then be given away (mailed out, handed out on the street, on campuses, taken to hospitals, nursing homes, shelters – wherever there’s a need) to those who could benefit, as a gesture of kindness, caring, and community. At the heart of the project is human connection.
By taking an artful approach to contemporary social phenomena, these social practices become informed by innumerable possibilities for change, improvement, and understanding.
